What is Medical Massage?

Medical Massage is a highly effective form of massage therapy that is outcome based. Your first session begins with an assessment to best determine the cause of your pain.  The assessment is performed even if you already have a diagnosis from your physician in order for us to understand the soft tissue components of your pain.  We will get a detailed history from you, perform special testing as needed,  and complete a full evaluation of your soft tissue. After the assessment, a plan of care is created specifically for you.

How is Medical Massage different from other types of massage?

First, the term Medical Massage is used far too loosely by massage therapists who attempt to treat pain. It is impossible to use a specific massage modality (i.e. Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue Massage, Cranio-Sacral Therapy) to treat pain conditions. Medical Massage is an umbrella that includes several modalities that have been scientifically proven to effectively treat soft tissue. The use of specific modalities, in addition to performing an assessment, is what differentiates Medical Massage from other modalities. The reason any single modality can not be used to treat a body in need is because many types of tissue are affected when you are experiencing pain.

Every medical massage deals with 4 types of tissue, the skin, fascia, muscle and bone. Instead of using a shotgun approach where all tissues are targeted using one type of treatment, Medical Massage uses different methods designed to work on each type of tissue individually. This type of approach produces reliable results because the right tool is being used for each problem area throughout the session. In order to properly treat a condition, Medical Massage sessions must be scheduled 1-4 days apart. These back to back sessions build upon one another and produce a positive, clinical response in the soft tissue body. Depending upon the problem and the health of the patient, it may take anywhere from 2-10 sessions to produce desired results.

Medical Massage

Medical Massage is outcome-based therapy – meaning instead of trying to alleviate symptoms, we focus on the cause of the pain. Not all conditions and pain are resolved by Medical Massage therefore it is very important to first schedule a Medical Massage consultation visit,  which includes an assessment that determines a plan of care.

Treatment plans will be for 2-7 sessions that are 2-4 days apart.
